The story of the ‘Prodigal Son’ may seem a simple and familiar one. But its relevance to the history of mankind and its modern-day resonance to each and every one of us, is both illuminating and alarming. For if we do not learn by our mistakes, we are destined to repeat them.

Whether we like it or not, life’s journey brings us all full circle, and the story of the Prodigal Son is not only about the redemption of one man, but the story of mankind’s desire to spend a life seeking that which he already possesses.

In reimagining this story for today’s audience, this musical and cinematic theatre experience is the vision of director and composer Carl Warner, who takes us on a journey through time and the inner space of the mind. This is both a rock music fantasy, and a profound trip of understanding and self-realisation, through the dreams and nightmares of our (and the protagonist’s) imagination.

From the rebellious teen who turns his back on his family, sells his soul to the devil, and squanders his inheritance. To the young man tormented by addiction to vice, bound by chains of pride, and lost in the downward spiral of his own demise. To the grown son who finds hope in humility, truth in facing his demons, and the courage to bury his pride and find love and forgiveness in returning home.

Played out it two acts through a blend of live music, onstage performance, and cinematic backdrop. We first follow a journey to the darkest and coldest depths of our being. A place where desperation and fear holds us tight in their grip, and all hope seems lost.

In the second act we find that we are not alone, and that hope can be found in each other. This hope is the light that helps us find our way out of the maze, giving us the strength to rise up and begin the journey home. Finally, when that which was lost is now found, we celebrate with a euphoric crescendo of light and song that will lift hearts and souls to a place unimagined, leaving the audience emotionally revived, pleasantly traumatised. and profoundly rocked.
